Should we play all the scales though? When I was still learning from my teacher several years back, he would start me off with C scale in first position, then others in the first position. Later more scales in higher positions. That's in addition to the pieces that I was learning.
Now that I stopped taking lessons (because of family commitments), I find that the only scales I do are those in the first position, if I feel inclined to do so.
Are there are basic set of scales that one must master?
