Known for guitars that are bold and powerful, and bodies larger than those of the Granada school, the Madrid school of guitar making was founded by the great Jose Ramirez I.
A great many other famous makers of the Madrid school were trained or influenced by the Ramirez dynasty for several generations.

Many great guitars have come from the UK, and some of their luthiers have gained international renown. The UK seems a good breeding ground for up and coming luthiers.
One of the new breed of luthiers from the UK is Earl S Marsh.

Jose Ramirez I was the founder of the Ramirez workshop. Born in Madrid in 1858, at the age of 12 he began working as an apprentice at the workshop of his Maestro Francisco Gonzalez located on the Carrera de San Jeranimo street of Madrid.
In 1890, he finally established himself at Concepcion Jeranimo nș 2, where his descendants carried on the business until 1995. The store has since been relocated to La Paz nÂș 8, very near the old shop. |
