Jose Ramirez I was the founder of the Ramirez workshop. Born in Madrid in 1858, at the age of 12 he began working as an apprentice at the workshop of his Maestro Francisco Gonzalez located on the Carrera de San Jeranimo street of Madrid.
In 1890, he finally established himself at Concepcion Jeranimo nș 2, where his descendants carried on the business until 1995. The store has since been relocated to La Paz nÂș 8, very near the old shop.
Jose Ramirez I taught his younger brother, Manuel Ramirez, as well as his son, Jose Ramirez II. He also was the teacher of Enrique Garcia that later established himself in Barcelona (where he trained Francisco Simplicio), and of Julian Gomez Ramirez. He also taught the trade to Antonio Viudes and to Rafael Casana, as well as to Alfonso Benito and to Antonio Gomez.
Jose Ramirez I was the most outstanding luthier of his time, and the so-called Madrid school of guitarmaking was born. In fact, flamenco guitarists appealed to him to look for solutions to the poor sound projection of the guitars that were built then. That's how Jose created the "tablao guitar" whose internal structure was a refinement of the pattern by Torres, but whose size was even bigger than classic guitars built in those days. The tablao guitar brought him greater success than ever.
