Many great guitars have come from the UK, and some of their luthiers have gained international renown. The UK seems a good breeding ground for up and coming luthiers.
One of the new breed of luthiers from the UK is Earl S Marsh.
In his own words: "Only the best in materials selection for guitar construction is acceptable in order to attain all of the qualities expected of a fine concert guitar."
It is arguably well-accepted in the guitarmaking industry that the ingredients used for producing a great guitar can be said to be pretty much the same across a very wide range of guitar makers all over the world. However, the guitar with that little extra comes from the maker with good hands, good eyes, good ears and that extra special added ingredient: 'Passion'.
Earl S Marsh strives to make his instruments worthy of the title 'Concert Guitars' that provides for purity and clarity of tone, together with excellent balance and projection.
His prefered choice of wood for the ribs and the backs of my guitars is Indian rosewood but he has used other woods such as English walnut, Myrtle, Jaguar ear, Maple and Arpuda. His preference for the soundboards is the best European spruce, sourced from the Swiss/Italian Alps and only the tightest grained spruce is used for the strutting and bracing. Sometimes he uses the best quality Western red cedar with either cedar strutting or spruce strutting.
