Don't you hate it?!?!? Snap, crack and ouch! It hurts, not so much on the finger or the nail, but in the heart. Break your nail when opening the car door -- and your world stops! "I hate classical guitar!", you blurt out. We've all had the NASTY experience of breaking our nails.
But all's not lost. If you ever break your nails again, these instructions from guitar teacher Phil Read will come in handy. Read on.
Ingredients:
- A small quantity of good silk about the thickness of a normal handkerchief.
- A small bottle or tube of Superglue (Crazy Glue).
- A good quality saphire or diamond dust nail file and a sheet of approximately 1500 grit wet type emery paper (Car painters will know where to get it from).
Instructions:
Cut a crescent of silk roughly the shape you want your new nail to be with enough length to give an overlap of 1/4 of an inch onto your own nail.
Apply a wetting of superglue onto the end of your nail and then place the crescent of silk onto the opposite hands thumbnail roughly aligned to the way it will fit onto the prepared nail.
I put it on the thumbnail because it is not likely to catch the glue and messs up the process. I then approach the coating of glue to the silk carefully until the cloth is picked up. Be careful you don't get too close or you will stick the cloth to your thumbnail.
If the silk is misaligned you can adjust it with the point of the nailfile. Read a book for ten minutes or so and then apply another coat of glue and then another after ten more minutes.
Next apply another coat of silk and three more coats of glue.
I do all of this about an hour before bed so that the whole
arrangment dries completely by next morning.
I then file and emery the attached new nail until the shape is perfect. This nail is almost indestructable and will last for many weeks. If you are careful you will be pleased with the tone too. I am always breaking my first finger nail and replacing it with this technique. Recently I developed a hooked middle finger and so I filed the nail off back to the quick and fitted a silk one and that is now wonderful - - I can play with out hooking.
