Eduardo Fernandez, popular Uruguayan classical guitarist with a worldwide following, has published a important new book "Essays on J. S. Bach's works for Lute". The works of Johann Sebastian Bach have always been very important in the guitar repertoire. This new book atttempts to contribute further to the study and performance of Bach's works.
While there are already several excellent editions available of the text of these works, there is also a lack of material to help with the understanding, analysis and knowledge of their context. This book is only the first of a planned series on Bach's Lute works. According to Mr Fernandez, "the first one focuses on general subjects, referring to specific examples and analyzing them as rigorously as I have been able to. The book is not a new performance edition of Bach's works for lute, neither an analysis of the questions relating to the text of the works (different manuscript versions, their origin, speculation on the destinataries of the works, history of their ownership, etc.). The questions posed refer necessarily to Bach's music in general, and I believe that the answers are not lacking in interest for non-guitarists, and generally for all interested listeners and students. The level of the analysis is rigorous, but no concept is introduced without definition, not only to avoid leaving any interested reader excluded from the argument but also to help with the solidity of the argument". The book is divided into 5 chapters: Preface 1. Introductory Dialogue 2. Musical discourse and rhetorics in Bach: two examples 3. Attempting a semantic approach: the two “da capo” fugues 4. On free ornamentation 5. The kaleidoscope of motives A note on Figurenlehre and numerology More information can be found at Mr Eduardo Fernandez's web site. Currently, the book is available in either printed or downloadable forms at www.artediciones.com |
