Cheryl Grice - Watterson, International Classical Guitarist, is to give one concert in Auckland as part of her North Island Tour.
The English guitarist, recognised as a gifted performer at an early age, won a Scholarship to the Royal Manchester School Of Music at the age of 16. Four years later she was awarded, by John Williams, the first ever Performer's Distinction given to a guitarist by the college.
During her final year of study with Gordon Crosskey and John Williams at the Royal Northern College of Music, she won first prize at the Lanchester International Guitar Competition in England and the Concorso Internazionale di Chitarra di Alessandria in Italy. In 1980 was awarded Joint 2nd place in the Segovia International Competitional in England which was recorded by the B.B.C.
Cheryl has appeared many times on British T.V. and Radio show. In 1978 she was personally invited by Julian Bream to record a music lesson with him for French T.V. and in that year made her debut concert at the Wigmore Hall.
In 1983 Cheryl took a break from performing and concentrated on teaching whilst raising a family. She later resumed her concert career as part of the Illyrian Duo ( guitar and flute ) giving many successfull recitals around Britain.
Emigrating to N.Z. in 1997 with her family, Cheryl is now Head of Guitar at the Nelson School of Music.
Cheryl's concert in Auckland will include works by J.S. Bach, Isaac Albeniz, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Yuquijiro Yocoh, Antonio Lauro, Augustin Barrios Mangore, George Gershwin and Frederico Moreno-Torroba.
